In a previous Internet Marketing Basics post we established that when starting out it is important to be clear that you are selling something, that the money comes from promoting your site as oppose to creating it, that you need to network and build relationships with others and you need to acquire the best training materials. In this post I am going to talk about the one thing that holds back 99% of new marketers – FOCUS!
Call it focus, dedication, single-mindedness, whatever you want, but you NEED it! You have to develop a focus to be successful. If you focus on something it grows!
Don’t make my mistake
When I started out I was building HTML content sites. The first site took a long time as I had to learn how to use my webhost’s cpanel©, how to upload a template, how to add content to the template, how to write simple HTML code for links and so on. There was a lot of stuff to learn, but through a process of trial and error I got my first site up.
I changed my business model
As a first effort the results were underwhelming and I quickly switched to WordPress blogs and another learning curve to be negotiated. I had to learn how to install wordpress, how to adjust the settings for SEO, how to post and publish content, what plugins I needed. Again it took time to get my site up and creating content everyday was very time-consuming and again the results were underwhelming.
I changed my business model… Again!
Then I switched to PLR sites and article marketing. Again, very time-consuming and labour intensive and for very little result. This was now six months into my IM career and I still didn’t know how to research a keyword properly or get a backlink (I didn’t even really know what a backlink was). Anyway, the point is that if you continually jump around from one thing to the next you will get very poor results and you will never master any aspect of internet marketing.
Pick a business model and stick to it
I learnt the hard way that focus, dedication and consistent action brings results. Not instant results, but results. Building up a website and promoting it so that it ranks well can take weeks, or months, depending on the competition. Now this promotion doesn’t have to take up all your time – 1 hour a day would be enough if you do it in a methodical and effective manner.
An Example Plan
One approach would be that, whilst you are promoting this first site for an hour a day, any other time that you have to dedicate to IM can be used to build a second site. Once your first site is ranking well, getting some visitors and earning a little income you can cut back promoting it to 1 or 2 hours a week and begin promoting your second site and building a third. Once you get a little regular income, plough it back into your business and pay to have some tasks automated, either by buying software, or by outsourcing. By following this plan you could eventually get to the point whereby you only do the research and essential promotionand all the labour intensive tasks are automated or outsourced.
Conclusion
Pick a business model and stick to it!
That’s it, really. nothing will work perfectly the first time you do it, but stick at it, keep testing and improving the system and in time you will master it.
If you follow the above advice you will need to make sure that you pick a viable business model to begin with. The next post will be about different IM business models and their pros and cons.
All the best,
Rob

Hi! thank you sharing info here.
Many of us are quite apprehensive 1st about making money online since we thought that we’ll be spending alot of money but for me I realized that I can do it without paying any dime. Seriously now, I realized it does exist! Many newbies on the internet, probably be lured to purchase the best thing that come across and I am afraid you’ll end up just losing money and more likely quit before I can even see results.
So my advice aside from the one you share is to read more and be cautious in following gurus, they may lead you astray.
I am just thankful that there are sites like yours which is very informative. Your site counts for me as a reader since I can take a free way (suggestions, etc) before I venture into the unknown.
so once again, thank you!
