Quick and Easy Keyword Research

“Quick and Easy Keyword Research”

Keyword research is an important first step in marketing to your niche. Now, at this point in your internet marketing career it’s important to take action and get out there and do stuff and not get bogged down in the technical challenges and be worrying about doing everything perfectly. Nothing’s perfect and it never will be.

The first place we need to go is back to Google’s keyword tool, you remember we used this tool when discussing niche research? Just type in the name of your niche, fill out the ‘captcha’ and get your list of keywords.

Now, for this study, I’ll be using the keyword phrase buy garden shed, so in the screen shot below you can see the results of my keyword search.

Buy Garden Shed' keyword research

I have highlighted orange some of the words I will target .  As you can see my strategy here is to play the ‘number of searches’ off against ‘advertiser competition’ and focus on terms that are not as competitive

You need 20 keywords to market with initially. But don’t just pick the ones with the most searches – look at the amount of advertiser competition and try and choose some keywords that have less competition. Although there will be fewer people searching for information with these terms, they will be much easier for you to rank with in the search engines as not so many marketers are targetting them.

Also do some searches using ‘modifiers’ such as “buy”, “review”, “purchase”, “info”, with your niche term as these can often be useful keywords.  Once you have your 20 terms select one that will serve as your main URL, the actual name of the site is of extreme importance for getting a good ranking in the search engines.

My main URL will be ‘buy garden shed’.  I’ve chosen this because it is obviously a good buying phrase – and I’m assuming that anyone typing this into their search box is seriously considering buying.

Now this is a very quick method for keyword research.  Some people spend hours and hours researching keywords and obviously the more you put in the more you get out.  However, at this stage we don’t need to be spending a long time on research – let’s just grab our words and start building.
